What Is BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing)?

BAH is a tax-free monthly allowance that offsets housing costs for service members who live off-base. Rates are set annually by the Department of Defense based on local rental costs, utilities, and renter's insurance in each military housing area (MHA).

How BAH Rates Are Determined

  • Duty Station: Your MHA (Military Housing Area) based on your installation ZIP code
  • Pay Grade: Higher ranks receive higher BAH
  • Dependency Status: With dependents rates are 20-30% higher than without
  • Annual Update: Rates change every January 1st based on rental market surveys
